A certain L Hinterleitner served with the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh Own Rifles (Cape Town based regiment) during the Boer War earning a one clasp (Cape Colony)Queens South Africa Medal. He was a Trooper with number 423.

There were others with the same surname in the same war.

Many Thanks Rory. I suspect that Ludwig is my wife's grandfather. Our information is very sketchy. Do you have any information on him regarding his age, where he came from etc.? The Hinterleitner family settled in Camps Bay, Cape Town after the Boer War. Is he related to Christian and John Henry (1183 + 170) Hinterleitner? Where else can you suggest that I look?

Regards

Jan

Hi Jan

Ludwig Hinterleitner died in the Cape in 1943. His estate file can be viewed at the Cape Archives in Roeland Street. There was no John Henry but a John Hans Hinterleitner who died, also in the Cape, in 1950. Ditto his file in the Archives.

JH Hinterleitner was regarded as an enemy subject in 1915 during WWI.

Hi Rory

Many thanks for that. Ludwig Hinterleitner of the Boer War looks like our Ludwig (Lutie). I have his birth date as January 24, 1887 which would make him a bit young for the Boer War? This date is a little suspect as it looks as if it was changed.

Regards

Jan

Hello Jan

All will be revealed when you pull his estate file from the Archives. It will tell you exactly when he died and how old he was - a simple arithmetic calculation thereafter and you have the year of his birth.

The others in the Boer War were a Christian and a J Hinterleitner.

Groete vir eers.

Rory
