Hi Rory

For your interest, I have been going through a box of old photos and find that Christian and Hans are brothers from a previous marriage and half brothers to Ludwig. Johann Hinterleitner was the father.

Hi Rory

This story has evolved further:

L Hinterleitner, trooper 423
2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh's Own Rifles
Queen's South African Medal + 1 clasp. Is that possible? He was between 12 and 15 years old during the conflict

J Hinterleitner - Christian aka Johan Christian Leopold Hinterleitner.
Regimental Unit: 2nd Imperial Light Horse. Regimental number, 1183?

Jh Hinterleitner - John Henry aka Johan Dietrich (Hans) Hinterleitner.
Regimental Unit: 2nd Imperial Light Horse. Regimental number, 1708?

Can you help me please?
I have been trying to get more information on these people on this site without success. I just can't get anywhere.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Jan

Hello Jan

There is not much more that I can add - have you tried Familysearch.org - typing South Africa in to the Location? That may yield some more results. Your best bet, however, is the attestation papers that are housed at Kew iro the ILH. Unfortunately they are "Covid Closed) at the moment but, through the aid of a researcher, it will be possible to get copies of those pertaining to Hinterleitner's once they reopen. A suggestion would be to use Kevin Asplin, he is very reasonable, price-wise.

Good luck with your future endeavours.

Regards

Rory

2nd Bn Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteer Rifles was formed in January 1901, in the flap that followed Gen Hertzog's invasion of Cape Colony. It was converted to mounted and renamed 'Colonial Light Horse' in October 1901. If Ludwig was only 14 years old, he must have looked older in order to have been accepted. I wonder how long it was before they discovered his true age and discharged him.

Arthur
