Moore, originally a Painter from Croydon, actually served in South Africa from the 24th of March 1900 until the 27th of September that same year.
He had originally joined the East Surrey Regiment, the wretched Young Buffs, in 1886 with service until 1894, which included actual Foreign Service too, his date of recall is not shown, WO97 confirms final discharge from the Army on the 21st of October 1902 in Dublin, his intended place of residence being number 3 St Johns Road Plymouth.
I note his medal has been used as a fob, WO100/185 confirms service during the Anglo Boer War with the 2nd Battalion, he had seen earlier service with the 1st Battalion, the clasp entitlement was Orange Free State, Transvaal and Laing's Nek.

My name is Peter Hancock and I live in rural Australia and have been researching family history. Just put on the training wheels in researching Second Boer War information. John Moore was born in Croydon Surrey, Married in Plymouth and died in Liskeard, Cornwall. Trying to piece together some dates for his army service. I am guessing Liskeard had some type of pension fund?? for returned wounded soldiers. I have a photo (not clear) and a photo of his medal (South Africa, Victoria Regina Et Imperatix 1575 Pte J Moore E Surrey regt.). Name search comes up empty. Findmypast ref WO97. Regular army service papers. Record set Anglo -Boer War army service papers.
Any advice greatly appreciated
