As previously discussed the Ribbon for the Boer War medal was missing, i assumed lost forever and overall not that concerned by this, i assumed he had taken the ribbon off and stitched it into his jacket for the Great War which to me made sense and lost in the years that followed.
But it turns out it did survive i just did not recognise it because of dirt and where it was located and I should have recognised it sooner.
William had a son David who was in the Second World War in North Africa and Italy and developed a relationship with a 16 year young Italian lady by the name of Rosa who in the long run would marry emigrate to NZ and they had a number of children and grandchildren.
Rosa is still alive at a spritely 96 (but amongst David's medal set was a Commemorative Medal for Military Operations in East Africa from the Italian Army given to Rosa Brother, this medal incorrectly had the Boer War ribbon attached, see photo, so a smaller piece of the original ribbon now very dirty did survive and was attached to the wrong medal.
