Hello All.

Recently, I have come into possession of this photo of Herbert Bennett (Attatched to the post). I have been trying to find any sources regarding his uniform or rank, to no avail (Outside of his Shoulder tabs, which while not clear in this picture, I believe say ‘TPD’). I have also been trying to find any records mentioning him, as I believe he was in the British Army before joining the ‘TPD’.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Jonathan

Hello Jonathan
Welcome to the forum

The enclosed image of the cap badge I found, does look very similar to the belt buckle design on your man. With regard to his previous service, do you have any further information on Herbert?

Hi Dave, Appreciate the reply.

I found a name matching his as well as the year he arrived in South Africa on this website’s list feature. I believe he was in the 1st Royal Dragoons with the number 4823.

Many thanks
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan

There is another contender for you to check out.

Trooper H W Bennett regimental number 1099
Who served in the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles.
Possible Transvaal connection there?

Hi Dave, I did see that.

I do think it’s a possibility, but I am a bit skeptical. According to family, he only arrived in South Africa in 1902. The Nominal Roll for the trooper you mention says 1901.
