It may be beneficial if the family are in agreement to share additional information pertaining to Herbert. The more details provided, for example, his date of birth, where born, Father, Mother's names etc, etc.
The more details supplied can sometimes hold the key and provide clues to help with research.

I would have suggested you search the FindMyPast military page (which is free to do) with that name you will have many potential matched to go through so, ideally, you will need to narrow down the search parameters if you can, as Dave suggests.

In case he died in South Africa, you could also search FamilySearch (free account available) but with the same proviso.
