Hi, I'm looking for any information about my grandfather who fought in the Second Boer War for the British Empire. His name was William Robert Jex and he lived in East Dereham, Norfolk, England. Sorry I don't have any other information about him.

Welcome to the forum, ran57ger,

One the rolls for the Boer War is 17245 Pte W R Jex of the Royal Army Medical Corps. He seems to have served in Cape Colony at the end of the war, in 1902.

This is the only W R Jex on the rolls.

There are service papers for this man, William Robert, born 1879 in East Dereham, Norfolk, England. These papers are available for free at the London Archives or at Cost from FindMyPast.

Hello ran57ger
Welcome to the forum.

Enclosed information regarding your Grandfather William Jex.
He served in South Africa towards the end of the conflict in the RAMC.
(Royal Army Medical Corps) The documents will provide some details for you.
He was awarded a Queens South Africa medal with a clasp for Cape Colony and a 1902 date bar. He was born in 1876 .

Thank you, Dave.

I mis-read his data of going to South Africa as 11 November 1902 and wondered how he received a QSA at all but then I realised it was 11 April. He must have landed in South Africa just before the end of the war.

Would his year of birth be 1879 rather than 1876?

I have found 2 dates for William Jex 1875 and 1876. The 1881 census records him as aged 5 .Find a grave records 1875.
