Hi,

I am conducting research on my third great-grandather, James Mitchell Moore (No. 1471), born around 1881 in Kimberley. I am not really familiar with the Boer War, so I hope I have come to the right place. He held the rank of Trooper in the 1st Kitchener's Fighting Scouts. He joined in Pretoria on August 7, 1901, and was discharged on July 7, 1902, following the unit's disbandment in Johannesburg. I was wondering if there are records somewhere containing Moore's parents names or photos of him that I can access for my genealogical research. I have attached James Moore Attestation Form, as this is one of the few Boer War records I have on him.

Thank you for your help in advance, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Josh

Hello Josh

Welcome to the forum. I notice that the attestation paper you kindly provided records a J Williams as your mans next of kin. Do you have anymore information on James's time at Transvaal Road Kimberley?
His Queens South Africa medal rolls record a Transvaal clasp and entitlement to the 1901 and 1902 date clasp. Interestingly, the remarks column mention that James may have served in the 2nd Imperial Light Horse. There is also a note, which if I have read it correctly, mentions a Prisoner of war at some point in the conflict. However, more research is required to ascertain if this relates to your James Mitchell Moore.
There were quite a few Moore's recorded in the Imperial Light Horse.
Just one more question for you, how certain are you that James was born in South Africa? The more details you can provide the more chance the forum members may be able to help.

Best regards

Dave...

PS. Ancestry has quite a few private photos recorded against J M Moore which I believe you are the custodian of. I'm guessing there are no images of James and his time in KFS?

Dave,

I think that annotation to the QSA roll is to his previous service in the Prince of Wales's Light Horse. He also served as Conductor in the ASC.

There is a false match in 31437 Trooper James Moore in the PoWLH, earning the CC and OFS clasps (WO100/264p144). His service dates were 12 February to 21 August 1901.

However, this man has a recorded age of 52. He did serve in the KFS but with number 1766.

There is another Moore in the PoWLH but this is 31430 James Herbert Moore.

I wonder if the PoWLH annotation on the KFS roll for J M Moore is in error and referred to the man beneath him in the roll, 1766 Moore KFS?

31437 Moore also served in Brabant's Horse and the NVAC according to the PoWLH roll.

Josh, there is unit information available here:

Josh,

There is a death notice for a man of this name who was born in 1881 in Cape Province and died 4 February 1946, aged 65. Is that him? The death notice does not list his parents.

Medal rolls for reference

Josh, sorry for the quality of the above document.

This is the PoW bit I cocked up, as David has kindly corrected, the information pertaining to your J M Moore, and errors regarding the medal roll remarks column.

I have been unsuccessful at present in finding any parents for your ancestor James. The information regarding his death in 1946 and his marriage to Maria in 1903 do not provide any clues. Have you been able to contact anyone regarding archive records in Kimberley, Northern Cape Province? Perhaps fellow S A forummers may be able to help?

Dave.
