Hi. This photo was amongst my nan’s box of family photos. Unfortunately she passed away some years ago now so can’t ask her any questions. She seemed fairly certain that there was a family member on it however what the relation is seems to change depending on who I speak to. She has Ramplin’s and Mowers in her family. However I can’t seem to find any relation that may fit the time of this photo. It’s a bit of a mystery! If anyone knows anything about the photo I’d be very interested to hear. I know nothing other than what’s printed on the anvil. It looks like it says ‘XI hrs meerut 1899’.

Hi,

As I'm sure you will be aware, the photograph was taken in Meerut, Bengal, India, and depicts the farriers of the 11th Hussars.

The 11th Hussars did see service in South Africa, but I cannot find anyone by the name of Mower or Ramplin on the medal rolls (for India or S. Africa).

From elsewhere on this site:

11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars
A detachment of 110 all ranks left for South Africa in 1899. The Regiment saw action in the siege of Ladysmith. The remainder of the Regiment had been despatched to join them but they were kept in Egypt where they had stopped off en route.
Some 114 medals were issued from the 11th Hussars roll in WO100/116. More medals were issued from other rolls and named to the 11th Hussars, for example No 2 Remount Department (WO100/234). See this forum post for more details: www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...sars-mystery?start=0

Many thanks for the information. I’m not sure why my nan had this photo? It’s a shame we probably won’t ever know who the relation may be or if there is indeed any relation on it.
