Hello all!

I am trying to identify this 5th Royal Irish Lancer.

I have been in touch with the Regimental Museum who have been able to tell me that he is in a private's uniform and that there are 229 possible persons with 3 bars for the 5th. However, they also could not understand why he would have the other medal which they identified as a West East Africa Service Medal.

If anyone has any thoughts / insights I would be very grateful - I am having the painting cleaned/restored so it may reveal more info in time.

Many thanks

Hello Bastin

Welcome to the forum. I know it's a long shot, but is the clasp on the East West Africa medal legible? There were 21 clasps awarded for these punitive actions between 1887 and 1900. It maybe your man possibly served in the Royal Navy before he joined the Redbreasts. The West India regiment and British led local forces including police were present. As for regular British regiments, I believe there were none present. Although a number of officers and NCO,s were awarded a medal while seconded to local units. A difficult quest for sure to identify your man.

Dave.. .
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Many thanks Dave for your reply - I am having the painting cleaned and repaired at the moment and I hope once that is done that I will be able to see what is on the bars - whcih may make it easier to narrow the field.

Will return with what I find out!
