Hello everyone

I am new to the site and new to anything to do with the Boer War so would appreciate some help from those more experienced. My wife’s grandfather William Lloyd served with the Royal Horse Artillery. From his service record it seems he was in A Battery until transferred to W Battery on 7/12/1901. The site however doesn’t seem to mention a W Battery for the RHA, is this because it had no involvement in the war? The last sheet of his service record shows he was awarded the QSA medal with clasps for Diamond Hill, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Paardeberg, Relief of Kimberley and Wittebergen and the KSA medal with 1901 and 1902 clasps. I checked the medal roll for A Battery on the site and there was no William Lloyd – any idea why he might be missing from this? I note that on the site is reference to the KSA and QSA rolls held by the National Archives. Are these likely to provide any more information than is on his service records? I wouldn’t want to pay a researcher to look at these if it is not worthwhile. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brian, welcome to the ABW Forum. I can find a Driver W.Lloyd in the RHA. He's the only man by that name I can find on the RHA QSA Roll. He was in Queen's Battery and his number was 14551. His clasps for his QSA match those you list. You mention service records. Can you check the service number on your records to see if 14551 Driver W.Lloyd is your man?

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Brian,

Here's what's on the roll for 14551 Driver W.Lloyd, RHA:

QSA, clasps Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Relief of Kimberley and Wittebergen. Listed on "Q" or "Queen's" Battery Royal Horse Artillery QSA Roll (Ref: WO 100/139 pg 152 on bottom of page but 153 is written at the top. 31 July 1901, Naauwpoort.) Nothing is entered under remarks.

The nominal list for the RHA records that Lloyd was issued his QSA 6 January 1902.

KSA, clasps SA 1901 & 1902. Listed on "U" Battery, RHA KSA Roll (Ref: WO 100/306 pg 110, 3rd November 1902, Manchester). There is a remark saying "Transferred time(?)expired 30-07-02" but it has been crossed out. It is the only remark crossed out on the page so it would seem that the remark was incorrect.

Cheers,

Mark
