Thanks, Frank, Mike & Jonathan. I've also found the UCT POW Camp database to be a helpful resource:

Cheers,

Mark

Hi

The computerised PoW data that I have came from Bloemfontein Museum in 1995. I soon found some anomalies and than worked through the 32560 records using my photocopied lists and corrected obvious spelling mistakes and incorrect surnames.

My then computer-fundi helped with programming and I can now search the data-base using parts of surnames or even initials only : this helps a lot.

I have also found the UCT Refugee Camp data of the greatest value. Among other "finds", I traced a recipient of an ABO medal in my collection to his entry on the QSA roll of the Canadian Scouts!! He never claimed his QSA, and his ABO medal was claimed and awarded posthumously in the days before computers. His son, who was a "bittereinder", put in a claim for the two medals (not knowing that his father was a "hensopper & joiner"!) and the Medal Board accepted the facts on the form.

Hi Mike and others

The man in question is Burgher Cornelis du Plessis., shown on the Canadian Scouts roll as entitled to the QSA with bars OFS and Tvl. However, his name as well as those of the other Burghers on the roll are marked as "A" i.e. "Awaiting Application" as well as "X" (my copy of the 1st roll page with the rubber stamp is indistinct and I can't make out the meaning of "X" (returned unclaimed?).

His son, F P du Plessis applied for his own ABO as well as for his father's ABO in 1953 and stated that C du Plessis died in 1906 and that his mother was also deceased. F.P. seems to have been a "bittereinder" and seems to have been unaware of his father being a "Hans-Kakie".

On the PoW database C du Plessis (Age 41, PoW 12218)is noted as captured on 7 Sept 1900 in Pretoria with "date of receipt" at Cape Town given as 19 Sept 1900. It is quite possible that he spent some 9 months in Cape Town (Green Point" before taking the oath and was sent back to his ewife in the Irene Camp.

On the UCT database Cornelis du Plessis is noted as arriving at the Irene Refugee Camp on 9 July 1901, departing on 1 Nov 1901 with reason given as "joined Canadian Scouts"
