Can anybody help me with my enquiry concerning Thomas Henry RYAN,a lance corporal in The 3rd Dragoon Guards. He was at Fulford Barracks in March 1899 when he married in York Register Office, but by the time of the 1901 census, his wife was described as a widow. I am trying to establish/confirm whether he died during the Boer War, and if so, ideally, when and where. He was born in Sheffield in 1874/75 and his wife lived in the Teesside area of Co Durham/North Yorks.

Any help please to Colin Smith email: [email protected]

Hello Colin,
There is nothing written in the remarks column of either of the original 3rd DG rolls, both the QSA, or their supplementary roll in respect of the two date bars, to suggest he died in South Africa, nor is he to be found on the published casualty roll.
Regards Frank.

Many thanks for that, Frank. It does look as though he survived the Boer war, but he didn't return to his wife. And so you can imagine how interested I am to discover what he did when he returned from South Africa, if he indeed did

Regards

Colin
