Hello - I'm researching a distant family member who went out to South Africa from his home on the South Coast of England, probably in 1898, and served in the Duke of Edinburgh's Own Volunteers. He is listed by the DEOV as receiving the King's South Africa Medal with 1901 and 1902 clasps, with the rank of Lieutenant, but also as seconded from them to the Army Service Corps.

I don't know any other details of his service there so does anyone know if the DEOV's service records still survive anywhere?

And he also married an English girl while out in SA - probably in 1898. Their marriage isn't listed under the Army BMDs at our UK National Archive - would there be any other SA records of UK citizens' marriages (possibly civilian rather than Army)?

Thanks - David

Hello David and welcome to this forum,
You will find some papers, and some only, in WO126/44 at Kew, if your man had a commission and was actually commissioned into the DOEVR, you are not likely to find any.
You may have to content yourself with their nominal roll in W0127, good luck!
Regards Frank

Hi Frank and QSAMike - thanks for such quick replies! My distant relation was Cyril Augustus Drummond. I have details of his Army career before the Boer War and also afterwards, but I believe he wasn't actually in the British Army when he went out to SA, so I don't know when he joined the DOEs. The only reason I can think of for his future wife to have travelled to SA would be as a nurse.

Many thanks - David
