Guys
I've taken a look in WO100 and the only Hyzy I can find is Peter Hyzy, No 276 Royal Canadian Dragoons and Canadian Scouts WO100/284.
Not a common name!

Hello Gemma,
I can't see another Hyzy, I've taken a look at the Grenadier Guards too,
if you served in the empire forces in South Africa, you were awarded the medal for your service, it was not really a case of having won them, so the rolls are usually a good source of information to start with.
The various regts/corps did have nominal rolls, but, these are not in any single place!
I have also checked the Boer War casualty roll as well, no luck I'm afraid, other than our friend Peter Hyzy, who is shown as missing in action at Bloemfontein on the 24rth April 1900, interestingly, whilst serving with the Canadian Mounted Rifles, if, in the future, you find he is a relative, then he would be worth looking in to.

Hello Gemma,
Then you will have problems with this because of the use of very differant names, Hill is a very common name here, moreover, if Jacob and Edmond were already in Pretoria when the war started, I think it is safe to say you can discount the Grenadier's, the uniform in the photo you show looks Canadian to me, perhaps Mike will be able to tell you more!

Thanks Mike, as it turns out Peter was another son of Jacob who was killed in 1900 I think. Maybe it is Jacob and Peter, not Edmund that I am supposed to look for. Do you have any information on Peter Hyzy born about 1877, Poland, thanks
