Hi People,

I am trying to Identify my ancestor, whilst going through my grandmothers photographs I found the one attached, any help would be much appreciated in trying to identify him, his unit, etc.. The rear of the photo has handwritten the name "Harry" but that is all that is known at this stage, I will be doing some Q & A with my eldest relatives shortly but family names it could be are , " Andrews" or " Moyniham" or " Johnson"

It clearly is printed the name of Henry Kisch whom I now gather was a photographer at the time also the name Ladysmith is shown below the picture.

I do appreciate to put a name to him at this stage is nigh on impossible but to find his regt would be a starting place.
Many thanks
Steve

Steve,

Thank you for your interesting post. The uniform appears to have few distinguishing marks upon it but perhaps someone can help with information.

Henry Kisch was indeed a photographer in Ladysmith. He is best known for his book "The Siege of Ladysmith in 120 Pictures, from Photographs by Henry Kisch, Resident Photographer.£

Best wishes

I have had a look at the Photo, but unfortunately no sign of a Cap or Collar or Shoulder insignias, to try to Identify him, what I can say is, that as he is wearing leg/calf puttees, and he is without spurs, so he would not be a cavalryman. On his left lower sleeve he is wearing one upsidedown stripe, this is a good conduct stripe awarded for not being found out for over a period of two years, and was awarded to Regular Soldiers only, he is wearing what I believe to be one of the recently issued Khaki coloured Uniforms, derived from the Army in India, where they were stained with cold tea remains, so as to blend in with the countryside. They had got rid of the Red jackets. Sorry I could not be of more help, regards from Norman Johnston (Johnz825) Ex 11th Hussars (Prince Alberts Own).

Hi Norman,
Many thanks for your efforts and thoughts on the picture, it certainly helps by at least narrowing some details down, Its just a shame I don't have more to go on with his name for a start, maybe I'll have to wait for another person in the same boat as me that may have a similar picture but know the regiment etc.. clutching at straws mmm
Thanks anyway,
Best regards
Steve
