Hello Peter,
As this man was serving in the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles you will find all the original material you are looking for at the TNA Kew, if his attestation and any discharge paper have survived, they will be found in WO126/67-73.
He has two numbers 751 Trooper to 30030 RQMS and was discharged medically unfit.
He is shown in the JMR nominal roll in WO127/11 and the medal roll entries are both in WO100/253 page 89, the main roll and page 212, this latter is their supplementary roll.
In addition I can tell you that for official purpose, the 1st Johannesburg Mounted Rifles was raised as a class C unit of the SAMIF at Johannesburg on the 18th of January 1901, with a strength of six squadrons, men could enlist for a period of either six months or to the end of the war.
It was disbanded in Johannesburg on the 7th of July 1902, there was, however, a 2nd JMR, this consisted of only one squadron when raised, it was merged in to the 1st JMR and disbanded on the same date.
Welcome to this forum Peter,
Regards Frank

I am a new member of the Forum, from Canada and a former medal collector who now just reads and researches. Having kids will do that to your pocketbook! My particular interest in the Boer War is in members of the Indian Army who served there.
At the moment I am trying to get some details on the war service of 30030 Trooper A. W. McElcheran, Johannesburg Mounted Rifles. he is very probably an ancestor of a good friend of mine, whose surname is McElcheran. McEleheran is a common mis-spelling of that name. A.W. McElcheran was a 40 year old travel agent from the United States - NY State, I think - who apparently enlisted in J'burg.
Any information as to how I might find the medal rolls or other info. on the JMR without actually travelling to Sa or the UK would be much appreciated.
