I have found service papers for John Altman which state he joined the South Lancashire Regiment in 1878 and served with them until 1908. He served with the 3rd Bn in South Africa and received DCM and a MID. Does anyne know why he received these awards or can anyone point me in the right direction to find out why he got them?

Hello Judith

Most citations for DCMs for the ABW have not survived - try the London Gazette.

A good many DCMs were given to senior NCOs for "good work" during the campaign and not for acts of gallantry. As he was a Sgt-Mjr thsi may be the case here.

I have found him in the LG in September 1901 but as usual, no details are given. I was hoping someone may have access to any war diary or regimental history that may give more information
