Hi
Would anyone be able to tell me how I could verify if names in lists of rolls could be my grandfather.I have found someone with the same name as his in 3 different corps and would like to know if it is possible to find details of men enlisting. Are there record books of enlistments and possibly where the men came from? I would love to solve this mystery but need help.

Good morning,
It all depends on the unit in which he served, if he was British, you should consult the records at the National Archives Kew London, much of which you will find on line via fmp and ancestry these days, compare what you already know with surviving records in WO96, WO97, WO363 and WO364 for the British Army, if he was serving in the SAMIF, you should look at WO126 and WO127, for the Navy, ADM188, also the cencus records in the RG series are worth looking at, as I said, it does all rather depend on just who he was.
Regards Frank
