In one of those strange turns of fate, I met the great grandson of Lt Percy Greathead yesterday. Having met he and his wife in another context, the conversation turned to South Africa and the Boer War (as it can often do!) and it was at this point that I learn his great grandfather has served on the ILH during the Boer War.

Looking at the QSA roll, he gained the RoM, Elandslaagte, DoL and Tr clasps.

The family have some letters he wrote during the siege which I hope to be able to share on the forum.

It was an amazing coincidence.

It is a small world! Given the current widespread interest in genealogy in the UK, and the valuable role this forum has played in assisting researchers, perhaps the Boer War is being restored to a more conscious part of the British memory. What is needed now is a film on a Boer War battle that is similar to 'Zulu' in plot and special effects (e.g. patriotic Welsh songs).

Lt Greathead's letters are something to look forward to. Is his QSA still with the family?

Regards
Brett
