I have a copy of his birth certificate here but I remember my mother saying that he lied about his age to get into the army. Does The one you have born in Coleraine 1877 give any more details such as parents names, which regiment or was he at Ladysmith?

If you have his birth certificate, then I would take the information on it as correct, so the fellow I mentioned will not be him.
I did notice a fellow in WO364, who had joined the Royal Irish Rifles in 1916 and did have service in the Anglo Boer War, but, in the Imperial Yeomanry, but the mans age is wrong.
As I said, I think the best thing for you to do would be to have a close look at all the papers for men with this name, who have served during the period in question, you should compare what you already know, his address, his children and his father etc with these surviving papers in the hope of finding a match.
Going back to your original post, from memory, neither the Royal Irish Rifles or Kitchener were involved at Ladysmith, though, Kitchener's little brother, Frank, was involved.

How would I get access to the papers you refer to?
It would be a very big coincidence, two Robert Maguires from Coleraine. It isn't a particularly common name in Coleraine.
If he did lie about his age it could possibly be the same R Maguire. Though I don't know why he needed to lie about his age unless he joined up before the Boer war, perhaps a year or two.
From reading other posts I don' t think the Royal Irish Rifles were in existence then so it must have been another regiment for the Boer war and then RRI in WW1.
More questions than answers here.
Thanks for your help.

All of WO364 is available is available at Kew and almost all is available on line these days too, if this man is the one you are looking for, his Anglo Boer War service was with the Imperial Yeomanry, so you should consult WO128 for any surviving service papers, again available at Kew and almost all on line too.
There were certainly two Robert Maguire's, your's and the other I mentioned who was born in 1877 in Coleraine, I looked at the birth index for your man and I looked at an additional baptism record too, for the other man.
People lied about their age, normally for financial reasons back in those days, in particular when joining the army, a private was paid more than a boy.
The Royal Irish Rifles have been around in various forms for a great many years, that particular title was taken in 1881, from the old 83rd and 86th Regiments, they then became the Royal Ulster Rifles, then they became part of the Royal Irish Rangers and in more recent times they have become part of the Royal Irish Regiment.

You will be surprised hearing from me again after all this time but I just thought I should let you know that you were correct.
I am now convinced that my grandfather was Robert Maguire 6415.
Thanks again.

Okay, good, was there something in particular about that man's details that convinced you?
