Can you help with any records for my Grandfather who was the bugle boy for Lord Roberts, he was injured as a young man and Lord Roberts had the best surgeons save his arm. My grandfathers name was William John Lee and any help would be appreciated as he is a bit of mystery to my family

Just checked the casualty list and there is no listing for a W. J. LEE.....

There is listed:

LEE, W. 982, PTE. WOUNDED NEAR LADYSMITH, 22/02/00, 2 R. LANC.
LEE, W. 4948, PTE. WOUNDED NEAR HEIDELBURG, 19/12/00, 13th HUSSARS
LEE, W, 1685, SGT. WOUNDED COLENSO, 21/02/00, 2 SOM LI

1685 LEE..... As a Sergeant to old to be a Bugler......
982 LEE..... Wounded before Roberts arrived in South Africa

That leaves 4948 Lee of the 13th Hussars??????

Does that sound familiar??????

There is a J.W. Lee but he is a member of a South African unit.....

Thanks for your reply, the problem is not alot is known about my grandfather as ne was a very private man and never talked about the army. What i have described was of hearsay through the family but also from a newspaper report from when my grandfather died. My father says he never talked about his past so i starting from scratch, from what i have found out about him already he couvered his tracks very well. From records i have found he lied about his age and i have an alternative surname with Lees
