My great granduncle Michael Gleeson came from Cratloe, in Co. Clare Ireland. He joined the British Army in England in 1896...he served in Gibraltar and then in South Africa (for more than 3 years 1899-1902 during the Anglo-Boer War)...he bought himself out of the army (discharged by purchase) on 21/12/1902 while he was STILL in South Africa...This information is a summary of what I discovered and have from military records which are quite detailed. I don't know what became of him after he left the army. I want to find out if after leaving the army in 1902, did he stay in South Africa and possibly marry there, (and have children?) or did he return to Ireland? I can't locate him in the 1911 Census of Ireland. It's a mystery. Any suggestions? Thanks Donal in Ireland....oh he is mentioned here on this site in the index though I have more information myself.

Hi Donal and welcome to the forum.

It sounds like you have a fair amount of information on his military service presumably sourced from his service papers?

Perhaps other members can suggest how best to search for his life after the Boer War. There are certainly indices that may be of use.

Good luck!

Donal

A search of the online records of the South African National Archives might bring results. They reveal only file descriptions and you will need a local researcher to copy relevant ones.
