Have been looking at the various posts on the forum and came upon this interesting one! My grandfather the OFS medic was stationed at Smiths Crossing during the siege and when the town was relieved the OFS forces withdrew up into van Reenen's Pass. He was stationed at what is now know as the Green Lantern Inn (at the time it was known as the Railway Hotel. Grandfather needed to go home on leave and his "leave pass" was written on a wine ticket and signed by the commander of the OFS forces Hoof Kommandant Prinsloo. The attached images refer.
