While researching my mother's family during the Boer War, I've found quite a few of my ancestors in the Middelburg RC ( www2.lib.uct.ac.za/mss/bccd/Histories/Middelburg/ ).

Lucas Barend Jacobus Groenewald (third great grandfather)
Age arrival: 51
Date arrival: 25/02/1902
Date departure: 12/01/1903

Coenraad Jacobus Groenewald (fourth great uncle)
Age arrival: 37
Date arrival: 17/02/1902
Date departure: 09/12/1902
Notes: 10 Feb 1902 at Middelburg. S. Trichard's commando.

Lucas Barend Jacobus Stieler (second great grandfather)
Age arrival: 19
Date arrival: 01/03/1902
Date departure: 12/08/1902
Notes: 28 Feb 1902. Of S Trichardt's commando

Hendrik Frederik Stieler (third great uncle)
Age arrival: 28
Date arrival: 03/03/1902
Date departure: 03/09/1902
Notes: 28 Feb 1902. Of S Trichardt's commando

Louis Willem Johannes Stieler (third great uncle)
Age arrival: 17
Date arrival: 01/03/1902
Date departure: 12/08/1902
Notes: 28 Feb 1902. S Trichardt's commando

Can anyone tell me more about S. Trichardt's Commando i.e. is this S.P.E. Trichardt's Commando? i.e. State Artillerist? My third great uncle F.W. Stieler, subject of another post on this forum, died at the Battle of Elandslaagte. He was in the Pretoria Staatsartillerie.

I found an article:
London, 24th February 1902.
Particulars which have come to hand of the recent capture of 164 Boers at Nooitgedacht on the Delagoa railway, by Colonel Parks' mounted force and a body of National Burgher Scouts, show that the troops under Colonels Parks, Williams, and Urmston, surprised three of Trichardt's laagers, but the members of the Boer Government and the notorious train-wrecker Jack Hindon escaped. Twenty of Trichardt's force surrendered at Middelburg, and Colonel Williams captured more on Saturday.

Is it safe to assume that the burghers listed above, who were part of S. Trichardt's Commando, are the one's referred to in article above?

Hi - did you find any more of this? I'm researching a father/son - Venter - in the Middleburg Commando under Trichardt. They surrendered on 10 February 1902 at Balmoral and I was wondering if this was in a particular action?

Hi, I'm also looking for more on the Middelburg commando

I found first clues at (British Concentration Camps of the South African War 1900-1902) But you need full names and the farm name of your fore father/mother.
Then I found this Register of POW's: www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKG-5S9C-G?i=55 . My Roux forefather also fought under S. Trichard. (or SPE Trichard)
Unfortunately it is not strictly chronological, but provide date captured, address, when departed and where the POW was held.

The forefather that I can't find was not in a concentration camp, died or turned national scout and I suspected also in the Middelburg commando. I would therefor lookout for future posts!

I still want to get a copy of "Geschiedenis, Werken En Streven Van Spe Trichardt, Luitenant Kolonel Der Vroegere Staats-Artillerie Zar Door Hemzelve Beschreven".

Send me the details of the Roux forefather you're looking for (here or DM) and I'll see what I can find. Was he an artillerist? I've got some good resources on Staatsartillerie etc.

Thank you for responding to my message!

1 Middelburg great grand father that I found: Daniel Jacobus Johannes Roux (referred to as Danie in informal documents) born 31 Jan 1863. POW Number: 21418
2nd great grand father: Johannes Petrus Nel, born 29 Nov 1883. The most info on him.... I found was that there are 8 x JP Nel in the Staats-Artillerie!

I would be grateful for any information that you could pass on.
Regards
