QSA with five clasps: CC, OFS, TRANS, SA1901, SA1902 named to: 4294 PTE L M GOLDIE. 1ST DGN GDS .

He was taken PoW and later released on 23/5/1901 at Bankplaats. (WO 100/112 p. 79)

Leslie Martin Goldie was born in 1879 in Dunoon, Arglyllshire, Scotland.  He was the son of Edward Goldie who later lived on New Chesterfield Street in Marylebone, London.  He married Margaret Maker at St. Calhoune in Dublin on 2/9/1908.  He was a printer by trade and enlisted on 29 August 1898 in the 1st Dragoon Guards in London.  He had previously served in the 1st Midd Royal Engineers Volunteers. He was 5'6" and weighed 121 lbs with a fresh complexion and brown hair and eyes.  He had a scar on his right cheek and blue dots on his left forearm.  He served at "home" from 29/8/98 to 15/1/01 when the regiment left for S. Africa.  He served there from 15/1/01 until he returned home from 24/3/02 to 12/9/02 and then again in S. Africa from13/9/02 to 14/11/02.  He returned to the UK and served until 28/6/06 when he transferred to the Army Reserve for the next two years.  He had served a total of 12 years by then.  When WWI broke out, he reenlisted in London, and was D/13943 Sergt. Leslie Martin Goldie in the 5th Dragoon Guards.  He died in France and Flanders on Wednesday, 31 October 1918, a mere 12 days before the armistice and is buried in St. Sever Extension Cemetery in Rouen, France plot K 16.

Sadly Goldie's BWM & Plaque are missing and if anyone knows their location, please contact me as I would like to reunite the group.

I have good news. A fellow collector on another forum alerted me that Goldie's Victory Medal was being offered for sale. I managed to contact the seller and it is now going to join his QSA for a partial reunite. Thanks very much to the fellow collector and the seller for helping this to happen. I will post a photo of the medals when I receive the Victory Medal.

And here is the partial reunite of Pte. Goldie's group. If anyone knows the locations of his BWM and Plaque. I would be most grateful if you'd contact me as I'd like to reunite the entire group.

Well done on the reunite. Based on personal experience the medals of one man can get split up between family members.

Leslie Martin Goldie appears on several public family trees on Ancestry the best of which appears to have been created by a first cousin several times removed.

This is the photo of Leslie shown on his profile:

I would say he was in valet mode here rather than soldier mode – the 1911 Census found him, his wife (of two years) and his mother-in-law living at 26 Richford Street, London W6 (3 rooms). He married Margaret Maheir in 1908, both Margaret & her mother were born in Ireland, there appears to have been no issue of the marriage. Leslie’s occupation is given as “valet”.

This is a photo attached to his father’s (Edward Goldie) profile. Assuming Vernon Phillpot who created the tree is the home person on the tree, Edward (1854 -1924) was his great-great grandfather.

Attached to the photo is a note:
“1871 - 91st Highlanders. Changed to 91st (Princess Louise's Argyllshire Highlanders).
Honour Guard at Windsor Castle for Princess Lousie's wedding. Regiment of Foot in August 1872 He was stationed in Stirling. Regimental name changes.
Could have served abroad - Zulu war?”

Finally Find-a-Grave, posted by a French man.

Hi David,
I can’t thank you enough for the info and photos on Goldie! The photo is great, and it’s always good to have a photo of the tombstone too. Thank you very much again! John
