I wonder how serious Mr Dillon was in his question about sending Boer prisoner to Ireland?

HoC, 26 April 1901

MR. DILLON (Mayo, E.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that Ahmednagar, the place to which 500 Boer prisoners have recently been sent, is unhealthy and in every respect unsuitable as a place of imprisonment for men coming from such a climate as that of South Africa; and whether he will consider the desirability of transferring these prisoners to some more suitable place, and whether he will consider the desirability of sending Boer prisoners in the future to Ireland.

I always thought they chose the closest locations to SA possible. Shopping men to the UK would have been the furthest possible point?
