Charles Edward Nicholls was Captain and Officer Commanding the Kaffrarian Volunteer Artillery 27.7.80. He served, commanding the unit during the Basutoland Gun War 1880–1881. He was present at a general meeting of the Kaffrarian Volunteer Artillery on 23.2.81.
