I find my lack of a decent library beginning to tell. I acquired the 1879 clasp SAGS to Tpr. A.P. Vlotman of the Natal Hussars but, quite aside from not knowing much about him - his unit too is rather puzzling.

Is there any source one can approach for more on this regiment? Other than the ubiquitous google of course which I have trawled.

"Forgotten Heroes" says that the original name of the NH was the Greytown Mounted Rifles. In 1866, the NH was raised by a Major Eastwood. In 1869 the two units amalgamated under the designation NH. In overall command in Pearson's column was Maj. Percy Barrow of 19H. Your man is on the roll as "Tpr.Vlotman" (no initial) and clasp 1879. 40 names on roll.

There must be another roll out there as Justin Young was able to reveal that Vlotman was an "A.L."

Researching these chaps can be frustrating.
