I have quite a few medals handed down to me from my father.
I am attaching photos of this medal
I'd love to know more about it
what was it awarded for and what would it be worth on the market

An interesting first post and a scarce medal.
A South African War medal and clasp for 1879, in this case, WO100/47 confirms Interpreter J McAlister as entitled to both medal and clasp, yes, it is certainly not without value.
Welcome here, by the way.

As Frank has already indicated, this is a very fine medal indeed. I have had out Terry Sole's book, 'For God, Queen and Colony', for a reason that I will explain elsewhere, and he identified 29 Interpreters who served during the Zulu War. His list includes 'Mr McAlister Interpreter to Army Medical Department'.

Interpreters played a vital role in this war, because the vast majority of Imperial soldiers that participated could not speak Zulu, and other local languages.

I hope that we will be seeing more of the medals given to you by your father.

Regards
Brett
