SAGS (1) 1879 (Lieut. Honble. P. M. Hely Hutchinson. R.N. HMS "Shah"), nearly extremely fine

The Honourable Patrick Maurice Hely-Hutchison was born in Paris on 27 April 1855. He was the third son of the 4th Earl of Donoughmore of Knocklofty, and the brother of the Rt. Hon. Sir Watler Hely-Hutchison (Governor-General and Commander in Chief of Natal and Zululand, 1893-1901).

Hely-Hutchison joined the Royal Navy as a Cadet in May 1868, and advanced to Sub-Lieutenant in April 1874. He served in H.M.S. Shah, May 1876 - October 1879, during which time he was promoted Lieutenant. Throughout his career he was closely involved with torpedoes and would surely have been to the fore during the battle of Pacocha - often referred to as the 'Huascar incident' - on 29 May 1877. On this day Shah and Amethyst engaged the Huascar - a rebel ironclad ship of the Peruvian Navy in the South Eastern Pacific. Shah fired nearly 250 shots and suffered splinter damage to her mast and it was the first occasion on which the self-propelled torpedo was fired in anger - with Hely-Hutchinson likely involved.

He subsequently served during the Zulu War, and was present ashore as part of the Naval Brigade (18 May - 21 July 1879) and accompanied the Etshowe Relief Column. He was consequently present at the battle of Ginghilovo and afterwards joined Crealock's Division in the advance to Port Durnford (Mentioned in Despatches; promoted). Subsequent service included H.M.S. Alexandra, March 1880 - September 1882, during which he was present at the bombardment of Alexandria (Egypt and Sudan Medal & clasp; Khedive's Star).

After service in South Africa and Egypt, Hely-Hutchison served in Australia as Torpedo Officer to the Victorian Navy, 1883-88. In 1884 '...the Victorian fleet was enlarged by the arrival of the first class torpedo boat Childers armed with four torpedoes for release over the side, using special dropping gear and two Hotchkiss guns. Lieutenant Heley Hutchison [sic] was in command of her during that October, on passage from Williamstown towards Geelong, when she struck an 'uncharted' rock. Childers escaped serious damage, but to this day the mysterious rock remains uncharted.' (Deeds Not Words, The Victorian Navy, Wilson P. Evans, refers)

Appointed to the command of Spider, 22 July - 6 September 1890 and Speedwell, 17 November 1890- January 1893 at the rank of Commander, he was approved for a transfer to Gibraltar on falling seriously ill on 23 January 1890. He sadly died of heart disease with dropsy en route to Gibraltar on 27 January 1893, being buried in the Lower Cemetery, Gibraltar

These medals are particularly nice, I really don't know why they have disappeared from the market place over the last couple of decades, it does not seem so long ago that a collector could simply go through the pages of a number of provincial dealers lists and buy two or three in a single day, sadly, not possible anymore, I can only suppose they have found long term homes.

Frank, I know what you mean. I have been digitising my old catalogues for a while now and the numbers of these medals in catalogues have noticeably decreased.

Hello David,
I can remember back to the days of receiving Brian Clark's listings and there tended to be a dozen or so to choose from every time, they have certainly dried up these days, I suppose they have caught peoples imagination, more books have been published, they are very pleasing, I can only assume people want to buy into that period of history.
I really do regret not buying more whilst they were available, for example, I never bought a humble Army Service Corps, simply because they appeared so common, at the time.
Yet a Column marches on it's stomach and has to be supplied in the field, so a simple medal to a Driver who had crossed that wretched river and earned his clasp , would be a nice thing, the recipient would certainly have seen events unfold.
Regards Frank

DCM Medals recently sold this SAGS with a regrettable claim to primacy.

SAGS (1) 1879 (SHAH O.COOPER, A.B. H.M.S) [sic]

Able Seaman Owen Cooper of HMS Shah was born on the 6th November 1852 on Euston Road, Middlesex and enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1870.

Cooper landed with the Naval Brigade, taking part at the battle of Gingindlovu and relief of Eshowe. However on 15th May, he died of a fever and was buried Fort Pearson.

The Zulu War diary of Bosun Henry Eason tells of the death of AB Thomas Cooper. It seems Cooper died after just a few hours of illness and had been attending Mr Cook, the Gunner who had been sent down to the Tugela, suffering with a fever. Cooper was Cook’s servant. Cooper was the first of Shah’s crew to die in Zululand. He was 27 years old.

Fort Pearson is situated above where the British No 1 (Coastal) Column crossed the Tugela River to invade Zululand on the 11th January 1879. The cemetery remains to this day but most grave stones are unnamed. There is however a memorial in Victoria Park, Portsmouth to the 10 members of Shah’s crew who died during the Zulu War.

Battle of Pacocha, and HMS Shah’s encounter with the Huascar

Coopers service papers confirm he was on HMS Shah from 17th August 1876 to 15th May 1879, and therefore would have been onboard during the action with the Huascar

She fought an action, the Battle of Pacocha, in company with the corvette HMS Amethyst on 29 May 1877 with the Peruvian armoured turret ship Huáscar which had been taken over by rebels opposed to the Peruvian Government and, it was feared, could be used to attack British shipping. The armoured Huáscar proved virtually impenetrable to the British guns, but the two unarmoured British ships had to keep clear of the Huáscar’s turret guns. In the course of the action the Shah fired the first wire-guided torpedo to be used in anger, although it missed – being outrun by Huáscar. During her time as flagship she also visited Pitcairn Island. On her voyage home she was diverted to South Africa to assist in the Anglo-Zulu War.

Not a battle casualty but none the less a scarce and desirable Naval Brigade medal.
