James Robbins, a mechanic from Umhlali, and a member of the Stanger Mounted Rifles, actually served in the Natal Volunteer Guides and was present at the battle of Inyezane on 22 January 1879 and the action at Ghinghelovo on 3 April 1879, on which latter occasion he was severely wounded. A small unit of some 55 men, the Natal Volunteer Guides largely comprised men drawn from the Stanger and Victoria Mounted Rifles (For God, Queen and Colony, by Terry Sole, refers.)

Hi David,
I see this thread is already over a year old ... so please ignore if need be.

I am trying to get the facts 100% correct ... and this might help all of us ...
We (the NMR Museum) have recently received original correspondence files of Isipingo Mounted Rifles and the Original diary of the Commanding Officer of the IMR ... from formation in 1878 to disbandment in 1882. In a post conflict Report to the Volunteer Office 16 Dec 1879, Capt Stainbank writes "March 24th I crossed into Zululand with our Quartermaster [Bower] and 27 men and served through the campaign as “Natal Guides” with the Stanger Mounted Rifles under Captain Addison."
It seems the IMR may have made up half or more of the NVG. What I am looking for is a list of the names of all the NVG members.
Regards
Wray

Hello Wray

Herewith from the late Terry Sole's For God, Queen and Colony. I have the medal to Francis Galloway of the Victoria Mounted Rifles.

I also have the medal to Edmund Glanville Pugh of the Isipingo M.R. and would be very interested if you could please look for any reference to him in the papers/diary you have now received.

I think Stainbank's reference to 27 men refers to the entire contingent, not merely the handful of I.M.R. chaps with them.

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory,
Thank you so much for this document. And thank you for throwing light on this ... just goes to show how important sentence structure is!

We are still working through all these documents but in a very un-thorough search and I see your Edmund Pugh on a Muster Roll for Dec 1879 and then in Stainbanks diary in Feb 1879.
Does he have the clasp? He is not on the attached medal list written by Capt Stainbank to Davey in the Volunteer Office ... maybe he didn't cross the border hence not on the list. But I will certainly lookout for Pugh as we work through this all.

I'll post the relevant docs in this and next message ...
