Greetings from Australia

The Queensland Museum has in its collection a Gew98 rifle with the words 'Standerton Commando' engraved into one side of the stock, and the name 'P J A Heiberg' engraved on the other side.

We'd love to hear from any Forum members who can help us identify the latter.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. The rifle you illustrated is a Mauser 7mm Model 1893 "Spanish pattern" made by Ludgwig Lowe, Berlin. Many thousands of these rifles were supplied to the Boers; along with other, older patterns of rifles. Many troops returning home to OZ carried one or more Boer Mausers with them. By the way, the term "Gew98" applies to the German service rifle Model 1898 used during the Great War and later.
Should someone get the opportunity, a bit of oil and gentle use of fine steel wool on the metal-work (and some TLC on the woodwork) will improve the rifle's appearance considerably.
Regards
IL.
