Good Evening Everyone...…

I just had a nice chat with a fellow collector on the phone with regards to the naming of the Natal medal he had just purchased and brought up a very interesting question at least it was to me...…

He wanted me to check a medal that was sold to him as being re-named…..

The medal had a name engraved in a running script and the rim was not thinned as sometimes happens...…

The interesting thing is though under the engraved name when looked at with a very high powered magnifier you can see the very light original naming..... And low and behold the name is the same as the engraved name...… At least he says he could make out the last 4 letters of the last name and the unit.....

Now for the question and your opinion...….

I checked all of the medals that I have in my collection and all of them have a light naming, meaning not as deep as a QSA..... It certainly looks like the person awarded the medal above did not like the way his name was on the medal and I guess he could not show it off so he had his name engraved deeper. Your Opinion......

The other thing is could other people have done the same thing..... And a re-named medal is actually still the one issued to the original owner......

We don't see all that many Natal '06s here and the few I have seen have very faint naming as you describe. On the item in question, could it be that the recipient's name was incorrectly shown and "needed" rectifying?

Mike,

What was the rank on the medal?

I ask because some medals to officers were engraved as this one: www.angloboerwar.com/forum/5-medals-and-...light-infantry#70334

I think it would certainly be interesting to see this particular medal.

Have a look at this. This is a different style and I wonder if it is okay. It looks impressed but heavily, and in the messy South African style seen on some WW1 and QSA medals.
