I am researching (as part of my postgraduate work) the treatment of British prisoners of war and am looking for details (name, rank, regiment, where captured etc) of who was held where in 1899/1900, preferably on a month by month basis. Does anyone know where I can find these records? All help appreciated. Thank you.

Elsewhere on this site will be found a Times newspaper listing of Brit prisoners released from the Waterval prison for starters. I have an old-fashioned approach to this kind of research - so, using the newspaper lists, I would sit down with a copy of the Palmer Casualty roll (actually an alphabetical version of the official SAFF/NFF casualty list) and check names, regimental numbers, place and date of capture, etc.
There have been many accounts on this site of officers and men held captive by the Boers and the treatment they received and you have a bit of searching to do.
Sorry I can't give you the exact buttons to push to assist in your research!
Good luck with your PG work.
Regards
IL.

Good Morning ASIDaw

I have the story of 2 men, Major A.L. Howard and Sgt. R.J. Northway both of the Canadian Scouts who were Murdered / Exicuted after surrendering 17th Feb. 1901..... It was reported by one witness that Howard's body had between 50 and 60 bullet wounds when found......

My current research is into men who were held at the camps rather than those unfortunate enough to have been caught after the camps had been liberated. I shall get back to you if I progress to the latter stages of the war.

Thanks for your response

QSA Mike: I'd be v. interested to read the story of the deaths of Major Howard and Sgt. Northway of the Canadian Scouts - could you perhaps provide a link, or start a new thread?
thanks!
Rob
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
