I'm showing my ignorance of history/geography here - apart from local volunteers and regiments already in Rhodesia (if any) before the war broke out, how did the others (eg Imperial Yeomanry 17 and 18 Battalions, various NZ, Australian, Canadian units) actually get there? I presume the Western railway line was cut off so they arrived via Beira?

John Stuart Menzies Pender was born in Scotland (?) on 25 May 1868. He acquired Prospector’s Licence No. 968 on 1 September 1891 at Tuli, for the purpose of prospecting for gold in Mashonaland and declared that to be his occupation when he attested for the Victoria Column in 1893. After the occupation of Matabeleland he obtained Prospector’s Licences Nos. 13047 and 2080 at Bulawayo on 24 December 1894 and 16 September 1895 respectively. On 15 November 1895 he pegged ten claims in what he called the ‘Bantam’ Reef, in Gwelo District. He served in “B” Troop, Mashonaland Mounted Police, during the Jameson Raid early in 1896, being sent back to England with the others for trial. Returning to Rhod he attested into the British South Africa Company Police as a Trooper on 1 November 1896, being promoted to Sergeant 3rd Class the same day. He became a Sub-Inspector on 1 June 1913, Assistant District Superintendent/Lieutenant on 14 October 1913, and resigned his commission on 13 March 1914.

Just a little trivia......

The number of bars issued to the B.S.A.P. .....

397 Cape Colony
77 Orange Free State
625 Transvaal
1015 Rhodesia
94 Defence of Mafeking
372 Relief of Mafeking
521 South Africa 1901
397 South Africa 1902
536 Rhodesia as a single clasp
269 QSA with date clasps only

The rarest it seems is Orange Free State......
