My latest acquisition to 7478 Pte. Harry Milton 1/KRRC severely wounded at Talana and invalided home.



Harry Milton enlisted at London 8 June 1892 aged 21 years 6 months. Born Blackfriars, London. Occupation bookbinder. Religion CofE. Born 7 May 1871. He had previous service with 5th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. On the 1881 census he is shown as the son-in-law (actually stepson) of William Goodenough (33) living with his mother Jane Goodenough (42), half brother Edwin Goodenough (3) and Martha Goodenough (2) at 2 Fleur de Lis Court, Blackfriars. On the 1891 census he is shown as a bookbinder aged 19 living with his widowed mother Jane (52) and half siblings Edwin (13), Elizabeth (9) and Grace (7) still at 2 Fleur de Lis Court. Hids half sister Martha died aged 2 in the second quarter of 1881. Posted to 4th Battalion 1 February 1893 and to 2nd Battalion 14 December 1893. Posted to 1st Battalion 1 January 1897. Sustained a gunshot wound to his left arm. Served in South Africa from 16 July 1896 to 25 May 1900 when he was invalided home. Posted to 3rd Battalion 20 June 1900. Posted to Provisonal Battalion 11 December 1901. Transferred to Army Reserve 16 February 1903. Discharged time expired 7 June 1904. Married Sarah Ann Day 3 September 1910. On the 1911 census he is shown as a cook (“Poor Law”) aged 39 living with his wife Sarah (36), father-in-law William Day (63), brothers-in-law William Charles Day (26) and Herbert Day (19) and sister-in-law Lillian Day (21) at 41 Markhouse Avenue, Walthamstow. On the 1921 census he is shown as a kitchen porter at St. George’s in the East Infirmary (effectively an extension to an existing workhouse) aged 50 living with his wife Sarah (46), son John (8 ) and brothers-in-law William (37) and Herbert (29) still at 41 Markhouse Road. On the 1939 Register he is shown as a retired verger aged 68 living with his wife Sarah (64), William Day (55) Christopher Sands (23) still at 41 Markhouse Avenue. Died at home at 41 Markhouse Avenue 16 August 1950 aged 80. Buried at Queen’s Road Cemetery, Walthamstow. Served in 1st Battalion in South Africa. 69 QSAs with single clasp Talana to the Battalion.
