By way of contrast to the EF condition of Pte George's QSA, the less than pristine one shown below and as my avatar was awarded to Tpr H C Gorton of the Imperial Light Horse, who was also wounded at Elandslaagte. Gorton later died of wounds after the Battle of Wagon Hill during the Siege of Ladysmith, so he never saw his medal. I believe the medal was polished frequently by Gorton's grieving mother during the 20 years that she outlived him.

I still think it would be quite a hard task to ever find a more pleasing example of the medal and clasp, whatsoever it's condition.

It is a lovely QSA and I can imagine it bringing back lots of memories each time it was brought out and polished.

The medal to Pte George sold for a hammer price of £600 this afternoon.

QSA (1) Eland (4148 Pte. E. Sutton, Devon. Regt.)

Sutton served with the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, in South Africa during the Boer War, and was severely wounded at Elandslaagte, 21 October 1899.
