ABO (Korpl. H.J.J. Combrinck). City Coins April 2013
The Forsyth ABO medal roll lists Korporaal Hendrik J.J. Combrink of the Carolina Commando twice and also has a third listing but with the surname spelt Combrinck as on the medal. However, inspection of the primary sources (original medal register and alphabetical card index as well as the files containing the Vorm ‘B’ applications) revealed that Combrink had indeed twice applied for the medal and that a clerical error (added ‘c’ in surname) also occurred. This had led to the triple entry in the Forsyth roll although only one medal had been issued.
Combrink fought at Spion Kop, where the Carolina Commando suffered a very high casualty rate, and subsequently took part in the Boer retreat through the Eastern Transvaal. He was taken prisoner at Klipkrantz on 8 December 1901 and sent to Bermuda.
