ABO (Burg. P J. de Waal). City Coins August 2011.

He joined the Vrede Commando on 11 October 1899, the day the Boer War started. He was in action at all the earlier Natal battles, e.g. Dundee (Talana), Colenso, Platrand (Wagon Hill) and Spioenkop.

His later service, up to the end of the war, was in the Free State.
