Served: Vryheid.

This acquisition from Spink last week is turning out to be a winner in more ways than one, proving that a "punt" on a medal can be rewarding. Christiaan Rudolph Erasmus served with the Vryheid Commando at Talana, Colenso and Spioenkop before transferring to the Swaziland Commando under Generals Chris Botha and Koot Opperman. He saw action at Scheepersnek where Major Gough was "ambushed", and at (Onverwacht) Bankkop on 3 February 1902 where he witnessed General Opperman being shot in the head. He was taken POW the same day. I am looking forward to researching this one! Note the copious comments he makes on the form - always of benefit when a recipient expands on his own service.
