Griffith, George. Burger 7 months 4 days ago #95478

Good day, this is my great grandfather. However, the story we have is that he came from Ireland and joined the Boere commando to fight against the British. He then got shot and my greatgrand mother found him, nursed him and they got married. They stayed on her family farm in what now is Golden Gate National Park. Any idea how I can get more information on my great grandfather? Many thanks, Wilma Griffith (van Staden)

Hi Wilma,

Welcome to the forum; researching family trees can be both frustrating and exciting; sometimes at the same time :)

You have come to the right place if you would like to discover more about your family connections to the Boer War.

Before we start a key point to note is that the Burgers had to apply for their medal and only if they did so would their name appear on this medal roll; so if there were 2 or more George Griffiths then only this medal/record would apply.

Ok; getting started:

1. There is a record of a George Griffith born in Bloemfontein on the 12th January 1874 and died on the 28th September 1954 on Smaldeel, Orange Free State. If this is not your relative then you can stop...but I'll carry on since I'm curious as it probably applies to this original post.

2. His wife was Aletta Maria Nel Griffith and his father was William Charles Griffith

3. According to his Death Notice his children were as follows:

4. According to the League of Veterans database; ref: wmbr.org.za/bond-oudstryders/13285-griffith-george-12-1-1874/

So unfortunately there is no record of any Irish connections; if he did come out as you mentioned above then he probably didn't apply for his medal.

I trust that was helpful.
Speak my name so that I may live again
