ABO (Burger B.A. Groenewaid). City Coins August 2014

A Cape Rebel from the farm Weltevreden, Barkly West, served in General Kolbe’s Commando and was in the action on 1 January 1900 on the farm Sunnyside (45 km NW of Belmont) when Lt.Col. Pilcher’s column surprised and attacked a Boer Commando. In the ensuing skirmish the attacking force lost 2 men, Tprs. V.S. Jones and D. McLeod of the Queensland Mounted Infantry: the first Australian casualties of the Boer War.

Groenewald was tried in default under “The Indemnity and Special Tribunals Act of 1900” at a sitting of the Commission held at Douglas on 21 April 1902 (Case No. 142). He was classified as a Class 2 Rebel and disqualified from voting till 21 April 1907.
