Although Hilgard Joubert’s initial Boer War service was with the Middelburg Commando at Spion Kop and the Ladysmith vicinity, he ended the war as part of Kaptein Henri Slegtkamp’s Scout Corps.

Slegtkamp, together with Jack Hindon, were known to the Boers as “The Heroes of Spion Kop” but to the British they were notorious as “train-wreckers”.
