Maartin Jonas stated in his application that he was an Adjudant in the Johannesburg Police
(ZARP’s) under Commandant G.M.J. van Dam. The latter signed his Vorm “B” in this rank, but
the medal was issued to Burger Jonas. He listed the following actions in which he took part:
Nicholson’s Nek 30 October 1899; Colenso 14 December 1899; Colesberg 6 January1900 and
Colesberg District 12 February 1900. This was followed by “etc. etc.”: one will therefore never
know whether Jonas was present at the famous stand of the ZARP’s at Bergendal (27 August
1900) and managed to escape capture. Sold with copy of Vorm “B”
