He served in the Staatsartillerie, was also entitled to wear the LVV wound riband.
During the Great War he served as a Trooper in the 8th South African Mounted Rifles (Steynsburg Troop) from February to May 1915, prior to gaining a commission in the 4th Mounted Rifles; his 1914-15 Trio was issued to him in 1931.
