ABO (Burger F A. [sic] Schmidt). City Coins November 2009

August Frederick Schmidt of the Krugersdorp Commando was crippled through a fall off his horse near Colesberg during February 1900. He was sent back to his home in Krugersdorp where he remained an invalid for the duration of the war. He received a disability pension and died a cripple.

The Board accepted his widow’s claim to the medal: this is an uncommon case of an ABO medal awarded to a man who was not serving at the end of the war and was neither PoW or KiA.
