I am researching the above killed at Hekpoort on 16/9/1900. I have considerable detail about his death (courtesy of the book written by Percy Ross) and about the various memorials to his death including those in the UK and the one at Burgershoop Cemetery. However I would like to find out whether as a result of his actions and death on 16/9/1900 he received any official recognition e.g. a mention in despatches or a bravery award. I understand he was awarded the QSA medal but need confirmation. Photo of HTS in uniform attached. He was 27 years old when he died. Barry Phillips, Oxford UK

Bello Barry......

You most likely have this from FMP.......

Looks like they had the wrong initials on the medal? Initials 'HJ'. QSA Clasps: J,DH,CC,OFS

Thanks for taking the time to get back to me so quickly. Yes, I did find the FMP entry for HTS but afraid I didn't realise the significance of the note or what it meant. Do you know what [South African Field Force J.B. Hayward & Sons] means? And do you think "initials H.J." means that the name (which I presume is on each medal) was wrongly recorded? There is certainly no record of an H.J. Stanley on FMP so this is looking promising. Regards Barry

Hi Barry......

That is a book published by J.B. Hayward that lists Casualties...... There is a possibility that the initials "H.J." may have been put on the medal..... We all have medals in our collections where the initials or last name has been spelt incorrectly......
