ABO (Burger J. van Jaarsveldt [sic];
1914-15 Star, BWM; Bilingual VM (Burg. J van Jaarsveldt Brands V.S.S.)

City Coins June 2004.

Johannes van Jaarsveld served in the Kroonstad Commando under Fieldcornet Thring. Aged 22 when taken PoW (No 8934) with the surrender of Gen Prinsloo at Fouriesburg on 30 July 1900 and sent to Ceylon.

Served at Colesburg and Ladysmith.

On his Vorm “B” medal application he specifically mentioned the “Battle of Yeomanry at Lindley”. This was the disastrous surrender of the 530 strong 13th (Irish) Bat. Imp. Yeo. on 31 May 1900.

His WWI service was in Botha’s L.H. and 5th Mtd. Brig., but trio was, as is usual for a Free Stater, named ‘Brand’s Vrystaatse Skutters’ (Free State Rifles).
