ABO (Burger R.S. van Niekerk .) City Coins August 2014.
Roelof van Niekerk’s Boer War service was under his father, Commandant S.J. van Vuuren of the Heilbron Commando. He saw action at Colesberg, Rensburg, Sannaspost, etc. before he was taken prisoner. He claimed a date of 27 July 1901, but the PoW Register lists him as No. 14660 with a date of 19 October 1900. His claim that he was transported to India on the SS City of Cambridge is however, confirmed on the PoW Register as amended by the Boer War Museum in Bloemfontein.
Roelof van Niekerk also served during World War I in East Africa with the 1st Mounted Brigade and S.A. Mounted Engineers. His WWI medals were only issued in mid-1941.
Included in the lot is his single Victory Medal (Bil.) named: Sjt. R.S. van Niekerk S.A.M.E. which is skimmed and officially re-impressed. Unfortunately the British War Medal is missing.
